Business launch checklist
The paperwork and setup most new U.S. businesses need before opening day, in the order to tackle it.
Requirements differ by state, city, and industry, so treat this as a starting point and check with your state's business office or a local Small Business Development Center.
Decide
- Choose a business structure (sole proprietorship, LLC, or corporation)
- Pick a name and check that it's available in your state
- Check that a matching website address and social media names are free
Register
- Register your business with your state, if your structure requires it
- Get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS. It's free.
- Register for state taxes, such as sales tax, if you'll sell taxable goods or services
Get permission
- Apply for a local business license
- Apply for any industry permits (food service, salon, contractor, and so on)
- Check zoning rules if you'll work from home or a new location
Set up your money
- Open a business bank account
- Choose how you'll track income and expenses
- Set aside money for taxes from each sale
Protect yourself
- Get general liability insurance, and any other coverage your industry needs
- Write down simple terms for customers: payment, refunds, and cancellations
Get found
- Create a free Google Business Profile
- Launch a simple website with your hours, location, and how to reach you
